CHAPTER SIX
SOLACE WRAPPED LEO up in his blanket and cradled him in her arms, rocking him gently. Sheâd just given him his evening feed, a bath and put him in a fresh onesie, and was in the process of putting him to bed.
It was evening, the sunset painting the sky with brilliant oranges and reds and golds, and she stood by the window in his room, watching it as she hummed a soft lullaby.
From the moment sheâd first taken him in her arms and his big grey eyes had looked up into hersâGalen had been right, Leo did have her eyesâthe rest of the world had fallen away. All her fury, all her pain, everything sheâd been through, none of it had mattered. The only thing that had was the baby she held. Her baby.
Finally, she had him. Finally, he was here where he belonged, safe in her arms. And it had been worth it. In that moment, everythingâeverythingâsheâd gone through had been worth it.
Galen had left to give her privacy and sheâd been desperately grateful to him for that, because all sheâd been able to do was hold her son and weep. Weep with grief and guilt for all the moments sheâd lost, yet also with dizzying joy that sheâd be with him for all the moments still to come. And the relief, the sheer, aching relief that he was safe and well and she was with him again.
Then had followed the happiest week of her life, with nothing to worry about and nothing to do except be with Leo.
Sheâd spent days lying with him on a blanket in amongst the olive trees, or with him in her arms on the couch in the living room, reading him a book. Or singing. Or showing him white pebbles or flowers or long stalks of green grass in the garden.
She didnât have to worry about money or a job, or how she was going to get nappies or food, or whether the bills had been paid and her electricity was going to get cut off. Everything was provided for her, whatever she asked for was delivered.
Her things from the hostel sheâd been staying in had appeared in one of the bedrooms the day after sheâd arrived, and, sure enough, Maria, Leoâs nanny, had left her a little book full of notes about Leo and his likes and dislikes. What his early months had been like and what kind of baby he was. There were even photos.
Solace had cried over that little book, again for everything sheâd missed out on, yet also for what had been given back to her, and it had taken a few days for that to stop hurting. A couple of times sheâd demanded frivolous things just to see if Galen really was as good as his word and anything she wanted would be given to her, and indeed they had been.
Sheâd worried off and on about his ridiculous proposal of marriage and what would happen in the
